The BBC has pledged to make £53m of technology-related savings by the end of 2017 as part of the wider cost-cutting measures announced today.

In the face of “constrained funding” the BBC said it will simplify its broadcast operations with fewer centres used to play out programmes and services.

And the broadcaster will look to drive savings from its contracts with external suppliers, “particularly when the BBC’s current outsourced technology agreement comes to an end in 2015” as part of its Delivering Quality First initiaitve.

The broadcaster also said that rather than create its own bespoke systems it will make greater use of industry-standard solutions, which it hopes will cut the cost of maintenance and support.

Simpler networks and infrastructure serving BBC staff and buildings together with “simple technologies that help support more flexible working for staff and to provide standard interfaces for external suppliers” will also be introduced.
