BBC2 is to follow six people who are building wildly different homes on the same terrace of houses as part of an ambitious regeneration project in Manchester.
The 4 x 60-minute Street of Dreams (working title) will be produced by the Leeds-based indie Yap Films and will chart their progress over two years until transmission in 2010.
Each of the participants won the chance to buy a prime canal-side plot in a competition run by property developer Urban Splash.
The winners will be challenged to come up with the most original buildings they can, with the only restrictions being that they -cannot exceed six storeys or the confines of their plots, and that they must have council approval. The inside of the house can be as unconventional as they like.
The series was ordered by BBC2 controller Roly Keating and Lisa Edwards, who will also executive produce.
"Street of Dreams has ambitious design and real human stories at its heart and gives us an insight into the exciting regeneration that is happening in Manchester and cities across Britain," Edwards said.
Yap founder Pauline Duffy, who is executive producing, added: "It's a fantastic project that will take viewers into a world of credible and engaging people who are embarking on a massive property adventure together."
The series will be directed by Jane Beckwith.
