Jimmy McGovern will make an unlikely move into daytime drama next year, with a stripped, week-long series for BBC1.
Moving On (working title) is a 5 x 45-minute series that will explore contemporary issues facing Britain. Each episode takes place in a house, and involves a family or individual either moving in or out.
BBC daytime controller Liam Keelan commissioned the show and will executive produce for the BBC.
He said: "I want BBC daytime to be topical and to grab people's attention, so a drama from someone of Jimmy's calibre and credibility fits the bill perfectly."
McGovern said the daytime series would be of an extremely high standard. "Part of the attraction is that we'll be making the programme in Liverpool, our home town, a city full of talent," he said.
Moving On is an LA Productions production for BBC daytime. McGovern and Colin McKeown will executive produce for LA Productions.
McGovern is best known for dramas such as The Street, Priest and The Lakes.
