ITN furious over Ray arrest in Beijing

ITN has vowed to make "the strongest possible protest" to the Chinese authorities after ITV News China correspondent John Ray was arrested and detained.

Ray, who has been based in Beijing since 2006, was arrested while he and his camera team were filming a pro-Tibetan protest about half a mile from the Olympic stadium.

He was detained for about 20 minutes and sustained minor injuries.

An ITN spokesman said: "John Ray is a fully accredited China correspondent who was doing his legitimate job as a journalist.

"We intend to protest in the strongest possible terms to the Chinese authorities and seek assurances that the treatment meted out to Mr Ray will not be repeated."

Prior to working in China, Ray was UK editor and before that he was ITV senior political correspondent.

He joined ITN in July 2000 from Sky News where he was also a political correspondent.
