Popstars, the entertainment format that gave Hear'Say their 15 minutes of fame, is to be remade in the Netherlands and South Africa.
Target Entertainment has sold remake rights to Dutch broadcaster SBS and South African public broadcaster SABC.
SBS6 will air its version of Popstars in a Friday primetime slot as part of its autumn season and is currently holding preliminary rounds and auditions to find a group of contestants.
The live shows will be split into different pop genres in which the hopefuls must prove their versatility. A jury in the studio and viewers at home will decide who goes through to the next round.
SABC will begin its search for contestants this autumn. Tartan Sound and Video Distillery will produce the South African series, which is slated for broadcast in January 2009.
The deals were brokered by Target Entertainment senior sales executive Karen Wise.
Created by Screentime, the format first launched in 1998 and has since been sold by Target to more than 90 countries including France and Germany.
