A format that pits various nude calendars against one another has proved a ratings winner in Spain, writes Will Hurrell.
The format
The Calendar of the Year is a light-hearted reality contest based on the rise in popularity of nude calendars.
The series is a contest between eight rival groups who must compete for a place in the final by posing nude for their group's calendar. In the first four episodes two different groups appear in each show. Viewers get an insight into their different characters and their lives as well as learning about their motivation for taking part in the show.
The viewers also get to see the groups posing for their nude shots. The calendars they feature in go on sale for one week and the group whose calendar sells the most copies goes through to the final. All the money raised goes to the charity of the groups' choice.
In the fifth and final episode, the four remaining groups come together in the studio with a public vote deciding the series winner.
Who's showing it?
The original series was produced by 3 Koma and broadcast on Spanish channel ETB.
Coming to the UK?
The international rights are owned by Dutch distributor Absolutely Independent and the format will be pitched to UK companies at Mipcom in October.
Could it work here?
How to Look Good Naked is a similarly cheeky show and its success for Channel 4 bodes well for this format.
