Radio struggling to battle online listening

Radio Festival: The explosion in online listening over the internet and new media devices is making it difficult for commercial radio broadcasters to differentiate themselves.

Speaking at the Radio Festival in Glasgow, submissions from Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger and Numis analyst Lorna Tilbin claimed that radio is no longer the first place many listeners go for the latest in music.

Tilbin said: "These days, people use the internet to download music. Even Paul McCartney released his new album through the Sunday Mail."

Rusbridger agreed, adding: "Once there is an established internet radio service, commercial broadcasters will be worried. They will be up against other broadcasters from around the world and not just the UK."
