Dr Crippen revealed to 1.2m

Five's Was Dr Crippen Innocent?

Five's documentary Was Dr Crippen Innocent? pulled in a steady 1.2m viewers last night at 8pm.

The hour-long historical programme, part of the channel's Revealed strand, re-examined the case of one of Britain's most infamous murderers. It held a largely steady audience throughout but managed to hit a high of 1.3m (6.2%).

The programme was up marginally on the channel's slot average for last year of 1.1m (5.1%) and in line with its performance this year of 1.2m (5%).

The show was a strong draw for ABC1 viewers as that demographic made up 40.8% of the audience. Younger viewers really weren't bothered though as viewers aged between 16 and 34 made up just 8% of the audience.

The latest series of Five's strand was down by 400,000 on the previous week's Legend of the Crystal Skulls but up on the start of the series on 17 June when 1.1m (4.8%) watched Last of the Dambusters.

Five's show did trail the terrestrial pack at the time. BBC2's highlights of the day's play from Wimbledon interested 1.5m (7.4%). Channel 4's ongoing series of Ten Years Younger took 2.2m (10.8%) in the same hour-long slot. An additional 136,000 watched on C4+1.

Comfortably taking the silver medal at 8pm was ITV1's Crash Scene Investigators on 3.5m (17.4%) but the clear leader was BBC1's medical drama Holby City with 5.3m (26.1%).

BBC1 stayed in pole position at 9pm with the second part of Criminal Justice at 9pm on 4.8m (22%), slightly off the channel's slot average so far this year of 5.2m (21.9%). ITV1's repeat of its popular Doc Martin drama series charmed 3.7m (17%). So far this year the commercial network has averaged 4.8m (20.5%).

Gordon Ramsay's F Word broke the 3 million mark once again at 9pm for C4 with 3.1m (14.4%) with an additional 229,000 on C4+1. The show was comfortably above its closest rivals.

BBC2's Duncan Bannatyne Takes on Tobacco was supported by 1.4m (6.3%). Just nudging ahead of BBC2 at the time was Five's repeat of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with 1.5m (7.1%).

Earlier on in peaktime at 7.30pm, BBC1's soap EastEnders had a tough time of things with 6m (31.2%), its second lowest audience of the year. The soap though still beat the challenge from ITV1's own soap as an hour-long edition of Emmerdale at 7pm had 5.6m (30.5%).
