The BBC is launching its first podcasts to feature music clips following a deal with royalties body Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).
It will launch 19 podcasts throughout November featuring 30-second clips of music, kicking off with Radio 1's Chart Show today (12 November), which will include the run down of the Top 40. Later this week, a range of new podcasts will be available, containing highlights from Radio 1 specialist music shows.
The BBC can include the music clips after incorporating its requirements for podcasts into its latest deal with PPL for the rights to music across its output.
From Saturday, 17 November, the portfolio expands to offer podcasts including folk an acoustic with Mike Harding from Radio 2, Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone from 6 Music and the Asian Network Chart. 1Xtra has podcasts from a range of music genres including hip hop, dancehall and garage.
Lesley Douglas, controller of BBC Radio 2, 6 Music and popular music said: "Music is at the heart of much of BBC radio. It is an exciting development that we can now reflect just some of that rich diversity within our podcasts and give music lovers the chance to sample an even broader range of music. The opportunity to reflect the combination of expert presenters with clips of the music they are showcasing should benefit both listeners and musicians alike."
The BBC's podcast service already offers more than 120 speech-only titles, including The Archers, Best of Moyles and Russell Brand's Radio 2 show.
