Hilary Devey’s first Channel 4 vehicle, The Intern, has been buried in an 11pm slot for the rest of the series.

Produced by FremantleMedia UK’s Boundless, the series follows Devey coaching three young people in each episode looking for jobs in different industries.

The five part series was playing on Thursday nights at 9pm, but the remainder of the series will be broadcast in an 11pm slot.

The first three episodes averaged 964k (4.27%) after the first episode launched with 1.3m (5.64%). The second episode attracted 879k (3.86%) and the third episode was watched by 684k (3.16%). All three episodes fell below the 12 month slot average of 1.7m (7.62%).

Insiders indicated the decision was taken because the final two episodes of the series were not editorially “strong enough” to play at 9pm. The slot will now be filled with repeats instead.

The show was announced last year at C4’s annual results along with the axed Hotel GB. At the time chief creative officer Jay Hunt said the show aimed to tackle the subject of youth unemployment.

Head of factual entertainment Liam Humphreys ordered the show as part of a raft of commissions which he hoped would become returning series. “It is about locating talent and blocked opportunity and giving that person the chance to get the job of their dreams – but it is done through hugely entertaining scenarios”, he told Broadcast last year.

Devey, who appeared on BBC2’s Dragon’s Den, signed a two-year exclusive deal with C4 in June last year. She is also going to front Twenty Twenty produced series, Hilary Devey’s Dole Office.
