Digital listening surges ahead

Digital radio listening has risen by 23% over the past three months.

Digital radio listening has surged in the last three months and now accounts for almost 17% of commercial radio listening compared to 13.8% last quarter.

According to today's Rajar's for the period 25 June to 16 September, DAB continues to lead the digital charge, recording over double the share of the next ranked platform.

RadioCentre chief executive Andrew Harrison said, "The increase in digital listening is now at a record high with 16.8% of commercial listening via digital platforms and commercial radio taking a 63% share of all listening to digital-only services."

The picture was also rosy for commercial radi overall. In terms of national commercial radio listening, 400,000 more people are tuning in than this time last year, bringing total listening figures to 14.2 million.

In London, commercial radio retains its dominance with 71% of Londoners listening to commercial radio every week, compared to 57% for the BBC, although collectively commercial radio now has a 53% share of all listening in the capital.

At a local level commercial radio also remains in a strong position with 77% share of all local listening in the UK.
