Endemol will move into feature films after its US subsidiary bought a majority stake in US indie Original Media.
Original Media's credits include Oscar-nominated films Half Nelson and The Squid and the Whale, plus unscripted TV series Miami Ink and LA Ink for TLC.
The indie also recently signed a first-look deal with major network NBC which led to a 13-episode commitment for the drama The Philanthropist for the 2008-09 TV season.
Original Media continue to operate as an independent company within Endemol USA, which is thought to have paid in the region of $50 million for the stake.
The acquisition is the first major deal for Endemol USA since Ron Milkes joined the company in April as senior vice president of corporate development with the mandate of expanding the company's US prescence.
Milkes told US trades that further acquisitions would follow this one.
