Ant and Dec takeaway awards

Ant and Dec’s place in the public’s affections remains undiminished despite the premium-rate phone-in scandal after the pair won two top prizes at the National TV Awards last night.

The Geordie pair shared the award for most popular entertainment presenter while Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, one of the show’s indicted in the Deloitte inquiry into ITV’s phone-ins, was named most popular entertianment programme.

The awards are voted for by the public and Ant and Dec’s win will have given comfort to ITV executives as the pair recently signed a £30m golden handcuffs deal.

Ant and Dec had been tipped to apologise over the row in their acceptance speech.
But on the night, they stopped short of mentioning the issue directly, thanking ITV and their management company for helping them get through “a difficult couple of weeks, especially for Saturday Night Takeaway”.

They accepted their awards via a live video link as they are preparing to film the next series of I’m A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here! in Australia, leaving The X-Factor’s Simon Cowell to accept on their behalf.

Ant & Dec’s pulling power also led to two of their shows winning in key categories. The X Factor beat the likes of Any Dream Will Do and Strictly Come Dancing for the best talent show award, while I’m A Celebrity -Get Me Out Of Here! was named best reality show.

Elsewhere, with its third consecutive prize for best drama, Doctor Who has now won an award for each season since its revival. David Tennant took the gong for best actor.

Eastenders also took home two prizes, for most popular serial drama and for most popular actress, which went to Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Slater.

Top Gear was named best factual programme, while Jeremy Clarkson was surprised by Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who presented him with a special recognition award.
