BBC backs Cleopatra doc

The BBC is to back a macabre new documentary being made for Discovery that promises to reveal the darker side of iconic Egyptian royal Cleopatra.

The corporation has signed up as a co-production partner on Cleopatra: Portrait of a Killer and will air the one-off special this winter on BBC1.

A two-hour version is being produced by Lion TV and Brave New Media for Discovery US but the BBC will broadcast an hour-long version.

The doc is based around the discovery of a body in a tomb, which archaeologists are convinced is one of Cleopatra's victims, murdered by her Roman lover, Mark Anthony, on her orders.

Mark Bell, BBC commissioning editor for specialist factual, said: “This film, based on riveting new archeological evidence, gives a fresh perspective on the world's original femme fatale. It may be ancient history, but it still makes a sensational story today,

The executive producer for Lion is Richard Bradley who said: “It's rare that you come across a real archaeological scoop that concerns one of history's greatest figures.

“We hope that this story will help the audience see Cleopatra as a real woman wrestling with power, rather than the semi-mythical figure of Liz Taylor and Carry On movies.”
