BBC1 snares Little Britain USA

BBC1 is to broadcast the US version of Little Britain this autumn.

The sketch show, made for cable channel HBO, will star Matt Lucas and David Walliams as old favourites Lou and Andy as well as new creations such as Bing Gordyn, the eighth astronaut to fly to the moon, and Mildred, who shares wildly inappropriate secrets from her shocking past with grandson Connor.

Former Friends star David Schwimmer, who directed live sequences in front of a studio audience, will also appear. There will be other cameos from Sting, actor Paul Rudd and talk show host Rosie O'Donnell.

Other new characters include:

  • Phyllis, who is powerless to ignore suggestions from the manipulative and dangerous Mr Doggy, her King Charles spaniel;

  • Mark and Tom, hyper-masculine gym buddies who will do anything for each other;

  • Ellie-Grace, a frilly little girl with the mouth of a truck driver;

  • Sandra and George, who have been married for 40 "glorious" years.

Established characters from the UK series that will feature in the US version include motor-mouthed juvenile Vicky Polland; Dafydd, the “only gay in the village”; Fatfighters leader Majorie Dawes; and Harvey, a young man who still craves his mother's “bitty”.

The executive producers are Lucas, Walliams, Simon Fuller, Larry Brezner, David Steinberg and Michael Patrick Jann.

The producer is Stephanie Cone Laing and the director is Michael Patrick Jann.

Fuller said: "Little Britain USA is a show we made for HBO but we always had in mind our British audience and hope everyone enjoys the new characters as much as they do the familiar ones."

He added that the anticipation for the new shows in the US has been "remarkable".

The new series is due to make its debut on US screens on 28 September.

BBC1 controller Jay Hunt added: "I am delighted Matt and Dave will be back on BBC One this autumn with a new series."
