C4 launches online animation channel

Channel 4 has teamed up with the creators of Wallace & Gromit and the talent behind the CGI revival of Pinky and Perky to launch an animation broadband channel.

The site, 4mations.tv, will pay for submissions from animators and will encourage users to discuss and vote on the films that are uploaded.

It will be promoted as a springboard for C4 to commission new work and will also host a back catalogue of animations screened by the broadcaster.

Animation indies Aardman and Lupus Films are backing the site, which will launch in a beta phase in June ahead of a full autumn launch. It will invite submissions from May.

The launch follows Suzie Templeton's Oscar win for the animated short Peter and the Wolf. C4's arts and performance commissioning editor Jan Younghusband ordered the project.

Last week C4 spelt out the role of digital media in delivering its public service remit in the future. Jon Gisby, C4's director of new media and technology, said: “4mations will enable us to meet the needs of an audience that is increasingly online. It's also the logical next step in working with the great creators of animation. This is another example of C4 working with its partners to reinvent itself for a fully digital future.”
