Des Lynam returns to BBC with ‘sporting Mastermind'
The former Grandstand presenter will front a new, sports-themed version of Mastermind, making him the third ever host of the classic quiz format after John Humphrys and Magnus Magnusson.
The new show, Sport Mastermind, will air as a 10 x 30-minute series in a primetime slot on BBC2 in the summer - alongside coverage of the Beijing Olympics, Wimbledon and Euro 2008.
Each episode will echo the traditional Mastermind format, with four contestants each answering two minutes of rapid-fire questions on a sporting specialist -subject and two minutes on general sporting knowledge. The winner of the series will take the 2008 Sport Mastermind title.
Lynam predicted great success for the series. “Bearing in mind how many people are fascinated by sport, I think this show will be a very popular complement to Mastermind,” he said. “I have always been a fan of the show and I am delighted to be involved.”
The show was ordered by Elaine Bedell, controller, entertainment commissioning, and will be made in-house by Vision Productions. It will be produced by Jon Kelly and executive produced by Caroline Roberts-Cherry.
