Grade attacks swearing on TV
Grade accepted that swearing has a place on TV and radio shows aimed at adult audiences, but called for more due care in how it can be employed without offending sections of the audience.
“We've let it go a bit and need to show a bit more thoughtfulness about how we use these words,” Grade said. “Clearly not enough consideration is given to a very large section of the audience who don't want to hear such words. We have to know why we're using them.”
Speaking to the Broadcasting Press Guild today, Grade declined to name individual shows or channels, but said that in light of the scandal over Jonathan Ross' and Russell Brand's phone call to actor Andrew Sachs on Brand's Radio 2 show, he would ask ITV director of television Peter Fincham to exercise caution on the use of swearing on his channels.
“It's perfectly legitimate to reflect everyday language on TV but we need to show a little more restraint,” Grade said.
Channel 4 recently responded to viewers' complaints about swearing on Jamie's Ministry of Food by offering an edited version on channel4.com.
