Sullivan: The future will reveal Freeview's flaws

Freeview's limitations will become more apparent as the digital TV marketplace evolves, according to BSkyB customer group managing director Brian Sullivan.

Speaking at the Broadcast Digital Channels conference this morning, he asserted that Freeview is “not the universal blueprint for a digital future”. He also claimed that capacity issues will mean it will only be able to offer a limited service in the future.

Talking about Freesat, Sullivan said: “The people behind Freesat have underestimated the customer service requirements in today's marketplace. This takes a lot of investment and research and if not done properly could kill something that was originally seen as a good idea. In fact, it could kill the concept of free TV in general.”

But director of Virgin Media TV, Johnny Webb, talked about the importance of having a stake in Freeview and said it was essential that pay TV operators had a stake in the platform. “It scares the hell out of me that kids watching Freeview do not get Nickelodeon,” he said.

Sullivan added that BSkyB had no desire to be on the forthcoming VoD platform being developed by BBC, ITV and Channel 4. But that any content that's publicly funded, be it on Kangaroo or the BBC's iPlayer, should be made available to all - including Sky.
