Virgin Media builds customers

Virgin Media added a net 4,900 new customers across all products in the first quarter.

The cable giant made 36,800 net new additions to its television service, 88,400 net new additions to its broadband offering and added 29,000 customers to the telephony service.

Virgin Media said these additions were mostly existing customers buying extra services.

Churn was down to 1.2% a month.

Operating income before depreciation, amortization and other charges was £324.2m in the three months to the end of March, on revenue of £1bn.

Meanwhile, operating loss fell to £4.6m from £15.3m in 2007.

Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett said the first-quarter results represented "another solid operational performance".

He said: "In particular, churn continued to decline, reflecting the emphasis that we have placed on this area.

Berkett added that the reduced churn and stabilizing of average revenue per user (ARPU) put the company in a strong position for growth.
