Chambers quits C4 for BBC Wales

Meredith Chambers, Channel 4's commissioning editor for documentaries, is to join BBC Wales as executive editor, factual and music.

In four years at C4, Chambers has overseen a string of factual hits such as Secret Millionaire and Cutting Edge. He previously produced major entertainment formats including Pop Idol and I'm a Celebrity for ITV.

The signing is a major coup for BBC Wales, which earlier this year merged its factual and music departments into a single Cardiff unit.

Adrian Davies, who heads the unit, said: "Meredith brings together his experiences across a whole mix of both hugely-popular series and serious documentaries.

"That someone of his calibre is coming to Wales is testimony to our track record and programme success to date."

BBC Wales has won awards for its much-emulated Tribe series, as well as its A Year at Kew and Paparazzi documentaries. It also has a strong slate ahead, including a Stephen Fry wildlife series called Last Chance to See.

In the pipeline is the long-running Young Musician of the Year as well as the Legends series and BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.

Chambers said: "I've got a strong sense that I'm joining a vibrant, ambitious team and that there's a real opportunity here to play a major part in delivering A-list content that will get noticed.

"After a great time at Channel 4, I feel fired up by the prospect of bringing the same creative passion to a whole new set of challenges."

Clare Hudson, BBC Wales' head of programmes in English, added: "Meredith will be joining an incredible pool of talent here in Wales, and I'm delighted he has decided to come on board at a time when we have an increasingly successful factual slate, not only for network, but also with our own home-grown programmes for Wales."

In addition to Chambers, BBC Wales has also recruited Judith Winnan as factual TV commissioning executive, responsible for ordering all factual output for BBC1 Wales and BBC2 Wales.

Winnan is currently managing director at the Cardiff-based indie Fulmar West and has previously worked at BBC Wales as a factual researcher.
