GMG will use Chris Tarrant as a weapon to take on the BBC, according to GMG group programme director John Simons.
Speaking at the radio festival in Glasgow Simons said Tarrant's arrival was a clear demonstration that GMG was ready to fight the BBC's dominance.
He said: "There is no point in us whinging about the BBC doing its job well we need to do our job well too."
He also added it was important to take some risks and not just rely on stripped formats.
