BSkyB profits up 25%

BSkyB has announced quarterly profits of £179m, up 25% for the three months to the end of September.

The satellite broadcaster said it added 87,000 net new customers in the quarter, a 5% rise year-on-year and above expectations.

Sky now has just under 9.1 million customers and is on course for its target of 10 million customers by 2010.

Over 4m British households now have Sky+, a net increase of 421,000 over the quarter. Meanwhile, Sky+ HD also grew at a record rate, rising 93,000 customers to 591,000.

Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said it was a "good set of results in a challenging environment".

Darroch added: "Looking ahead, the customer environment will remain challenging and we are well positioned to manage the business accordingly. Our products are better than ever."
