Variety Club Showbiz Awards: Noel Edmonds has taken a veiled swipe at the producers behind Russell Brand's infamous prank call to Andrew Sachs.

Speaking at the 56th Variety Club Showbiz Awards last night, the Deal or No Deal host harked back to his early days in broadcasting, which included over 10 years as a DJ on BBC Radio 1.

"I was very fortunate that I came up through an era where production values were very high," he said.

"Back then, there were experienced producers who were not frightened to guide, advise and occasionally censure the talent."

The producers behind the R2 show in which Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross left lewd messages on Andrew Sachs answerphone have been criticised for not censuring the broadcast that caused a media storm and led to the suspension of Ross as well as the resignation of Brand and R2 controller Lesley Douglas.

Edmonds was at the event to accept an award for Showbusiness Personality of the year from former Blind Date host Cilla Black, who introduced him as "an old sparring partner".

Edmonds added: "To have a success in this business is rare and difficult. To have enduing success is thanks to good fortune and good production teams."

Trophies were also handed to Peep Show duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb, who picked up the Comedy Award, while Alan Carr was named TV Presenter of the Year. Merlin star Colin Morgan won the Caron Keating Award for Outstanding New Talent.

Film stars including Michael Caine and James McAvoy were in attendance to pick up prizes, while Al Pacino recorded a special message from Los Angeles to accept the International Award.

Impressionist Jon Culshaw hosted the ceremony, to be broadcast on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD at 5pm on 30 November.

Founded in 1949, the Variety Club of Great Britain raises money for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children.
