YouTube's Walker joins myvideorights board

YouTube's partnerships director Patrick Walker is to fight online copyright issues after being appointed to the board of myvideorights.com.

Walker will become a non-executive director of the company, joining former Endemol chief creative officer Peter Bazalgette, former Carlton TV International chief executive Rupert Dilnott-Cooper, technology consultant Richard Mansell and ex-Sun editor Kelvin Mackenzie.

Myvideorights.com specialises in the distribution of rights-cleared material to sites such as YouTube. Its catalogue includes content from All3Media International, Eagle Rock, ESPN International and Zodiak International.

Walker joined Google in January 2006 prior to its acquisition of YouTube. He initially led the development of content strategy and partnerships for Google Video in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, responsibilities he now holds specifically for YouTube.

The video sharing site has had a long battle with users posting copyrighted material and Walker has been instrumental in forming partnerships with 600 media companies such as the BBC, Endemol, Channel 4 and Turner Broadcasting to provide cleared material on official sub-channels.

Walker started out as a TV producer for Japan's public broadcaster NHK and helped to launch the world's first HD channel. He subsequently joined BBC News as a journalist in Japan and South East Asia and returned to London in 2000 to join TWI's management team to launch one of the earliest converged web and TV services.
