25 BBC radio newsroom journalist jobs will be transferred to BBC Radio 5 Live next year as part of a change to the way the news and sport network operates.
Members of the BBC newsroom, whose jobs were at risk because of BBC cut backs, will now have the option to move to 5 Live in advance of the station's move to Salford in 2011.
The rationale behind the move is that it will create a more "editorially cohesive and efficient radio station with news and programming linked more closely together."
A source said: "To make it worthwhile we'll have to avoid duplication of content."
"We have to start preparing for the change now, although it's hard to get a grasp of something that far away most people aren't even sure if they'll still be in the same jobs."
The BBC radio newsroom currently supplies news content to all of the corporation's national stations except Radio 1.
