Red Planet moves into factual

Drama indie Red Planet Pictures is branching out into factual programming.

The indie, set up by Life on Mars co-creator Tony Jordan, has appointed factual executive Mary Downes to head its new division. She will develop both factual and factual entertainment projects.

Prior to joining Red Planet, Downes spent 12 years in the specialist factual and current affairs departments of the BBC. Her credits include Art That Shook the World, The Big Read, award-winning docu-drama Dickens and RTS-nominated current affairs series If....

Managing director Jordan said: “Although my experience and expertise is in drama I have always had a great passion for factual programming.”

Downes said she was planning to build on Jordan’s instinct for what touches people’s lives. “We want to make factual programmes that can really entertain and reflect the passions and concerns of our audience.”

Red Planet is working on a second series of police drama Holby Blue for BBC1 and groundbreaking dual dramas Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach with Kudos.
