The shadow media secretary has called on the government to place no more restrictions on TV advertising, in a bid to protect the future of children's TV.
In a speech to the annual Showcomotion children's media conference in Sheffield last night (2 July), Ed Vaizey called for a more coherent government strategy on child obesity rather than subject TV to more "regulations and restrictions".
"Advertising restrictions during children's programmes have made it harder for commercial broadcasters to raise the revenue they need to invest in children's TV," he told the conference. "We will oppose moves to place more restrictions on TV advertising."
Although the Conservative Party has yet to endorse any of Ofcom's four options for the future of public broadcasting, Vaizey reiterated calls for the plurality of provision for children's TV and for more British-made shows.
"While excellent, the BBC alone is not enough. It is only by making it viable for the commercial sector to produce children's media that our young people will have the range and quality of programmes that they deserve."
