High street shops will come under scrutiny in a new BBC3 reality TV documentary about how the clothes we wear are made in third world countries.

High street shops will come under scrutiny in a new BBC3 reality TV documentary about how the clothes we wear are made in third world countries.

The 4 x 60-minute series Making the Clothes I Wear(working title) will follow six high street fashionistas as they visit third world clothing factories, observing not just the working conditions but also the wider life of a clothing factory worker.

The series is produced by Ricochet and comes after allegations that many prominent high street retailers exploit factory workers around the world.

Investigative press reports suggest that the average British consumer would be shocked by the conditions in many factories.

At the end of the series the six participants will be asked to review their experiences and discuss whether they feel any different about the low cost and largely disposable garments that they wear.

The series will air early next year and was commissioned by the BBC's Ben Gale and Harry Lansdown. The latter will also executive produce the show. Other executive producers on the series include Mark Rubens, Jo Ball and Tim Quicke from Ricochet.

BBC3 controller Danny Cohen said: 'BBC3 should strive to explore complex issues in compelling ways. I am excited by Making The Clothes I Wear's mixture of youthfulness and purpose.'
