ITV is to resurrect News at Ten with former presenter Sir Trevor McDonald at the helm.
The broadcaster's executive chairman Michael Grade had previously hinted that he would like to bring the programme back. It is understood that the bulletin will switch from 10:30pm to 10pm next year.
ITV is also understood to have hired ex-Sky News anchor Julie Etchingham to co-present the news with McDonald. She was replaced at Sky News last week by former BBC presenter Dermot Murnaghan.
News at Ten was launched in 1967 and was first axed by ITV in 1999 after the regulator at the time, the Independent Television Commission, was persuaded ITV could clear primetime schedules for events such as Champions League football matches and blockbuster films.
Earlier this year, Grade said: "It was a shocking mistake to move News at Ten – it damaged ITV more than anything. How we put that right we shall see. It's a highly competitive environment and the effect of any changes is dissipated by advance notice."
ITV was unavailable for comment.
