Davie to take over from Abramsky

Tim Davie has been named the new director of BBC audio and music.

Davie, who is currently the corporation's director of marketing, communications and audiences division, replaces Jenny Abramsky, who is leaving the BBC after 39 years. Davie also sits on the BBC executive board.

In his new role, Davie will oversee BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Live and the BBC digital radio stations 1Xtra, 6 Music, BBC 7, 5 Live Sports Extra and the Asian Network.

Furthermore, he will also be responsible for the three BBC orchestras in England, the BBC singers, the BBC proms, classical music and performance television and radio resources.

Davie's other responsibilities include overseeing radio drama, television music entertainment as well as overseeing the overall strategy for all audio across the BBC.

Abramsky, who announced her departure earlier this year, will the BBC at the end of September, when she will begin chairing the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Another marketing man rises. This is a decision that will send shock-waves through much of the broadcasting industry. Jenny Abramsky, who came from a programming background, replaced by a marketer who used to work for Pepsi. Davie is extremely clever and capable. But just as Andy Duncan's shortcomings were exposed during the Big Brother row at C4, Davie will face questions about how he will handle major issues around content and programming. Ultimately this decision shows where the industry is heading - with strategic marketing skills and a deep understanding of the audience valued over traditional programming experience.
