BBC apologises to Sachs

The BBC has apologised to actor Andrew Sachs after receiving more than 500 complaints about the 'unacceptable and offensive' messages left on his answer phone by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross.

They left messages on the ex-Fawlty Towers star's answer machine during a pre-recorded show saying that Brand had slept with his granddaughter, Georgina.

Sachs, who played simple Spanish waiter Manuel in the classic John Cleese Fawlty Towers, had failed to respond to a call for an arranged interview for Brand's BBC Radio 2 show.

As a result, Brand and his guest Ross, decided to carry on talking to his answering machine.

Brand said he had "respect for your lineage and progeny" at which point Ross blurted out "he fucked your granddaughter", referring to an exchange at the start of the show - which was pre-recorded, not live – to loud laughter in the studio.

On his next show, Brand issued an apology for the calls.

Wossy and Brand are only 'popular' because of the huge exposure the media gives them. This rather careless behaviour only shows them up for what they really are. Moyles can give a masterclass in 'disrespectful' radio without hurting a fly, and making you laugh out loud too (OK, my opinion, but it has happened, and he does it 5 days a week without breaking sweat!). Neither of these two is especially witty or funny, they both rely on the lower strata of public performance artistry (smut, innuendo and lack of respect) to bolster their 'acts'. In my opinion, Woss is considerably less good at what he is paid a fortune for (radio show, talk-show host in particular) than almost anyone else who has been given the same opportunities. OK, I know a certain demographic, licence payers all, would weep into their lunchtime chardonnays if he disappeared, and another, more youthful demographic, less likely to be licence-payers, would have to find another implausible idol to worship unknowingly should Brand lose out to justice but what price integrity, eh BBC? Come on, do the right thing, and spend the money more wisely in doing what Auntie has always done best of all: finding, developing, promoting and exposing real talent.

I moved away from full-time TV work when the levels of competence, management skill and presentation began to drop drastically. Even before the current economic temperature, the BBC had to make savage cutbacks following too much Birt, and too little Dyke. Who now, is able to justify the expenditure of licence fee income on the wages and expenses of messrs Ross and Brand when there are presenters with talent out there?

I'm not easily shocked, but this is a really shameful episode - the full tastelessness of which the story above doesn't really do justice to - and Russell Brand's half-hearted apology was truly pathetic. I think both Brand and Ross should be made to give a large chunk of their grossly inflated wages to a charity of Andrew Sachs' choice.

Amazingly juvenile behaviour from adults. Personally I find both broadcasters lacking in respect, and am surprised at the extortionate salaries they receive. Perhaps it is a sad reflection of values in our modern society that enables people like this to be classified as 'popular'

They both should be totally ashamed of their behaviour, this is the sort of thing you may expect from teenagers not grown men who should know better, The BBC should rethink renewing their contracts
