Rookie breakfast presenting duo Rickie and Melvin helped Kiss FM overtake GCap's 95.8 Capital Radio as the third most popular commercial radio station in London with a 4.5% market share to Capital's 4.1%.

The pair were plucked from obscurity by Kiss group programme director Andy Roberts earlier this year, who decided to put them on Kiss FM's breakfast show on a trial basis for the summer. In Q2 they delivered 688,000 listeners per week compared to the 583,000 that their predecessor Robin Banks attracted in Q1.

Rickie and Melvin are now expected to be signed up on a permanent basis. Roberts said: 'I wanted to try something from scratch, something fresh. They hadn't done radio before but I thought, 'they are the right age, they have a decent chemistry, a bit rough and ready, let's give it a try, sink or swim'. I'm delighted with how they've done.'
