The BBC’s director of policy and strategy, John Tate, has been appointed chairman of BBC Studios and Post Production.

Tate succeeds BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith, who has been chairman of the business since June 2008.

Tate, who starts in the role today, said: “I am delighted to be taking on the chairmanship at this exciting time and trying to build on the very strong performance last year.

“I am looking forward to seeing the business continue to explore new opportunities across the media industry, and to help in its delivery of high quality services to all the company’s partners.”

Before joining the BBC, Tate was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and subsequently PA Consulting Group, where he specialised in strategy development and implementation.
