Tim Thorsteinson has been appointed chief executive of Quantel and Snell.

Thorsteinson replaces Ray Cross who has stepped down as chairman and chief executive after some 10 years with the manufacturer.

In a statement, Quantel and Snell said that Cross, who recently oversaw Quantel’s acquisition of Snell, had “decided that now is the right time to hand over to someone to lead the next stage of the business’ evolution”.

Lloyds Development Capital managing director and Quantel board director Chris Hurley thanked Cross for his “hard work and achievements at Quantel over the past 10 years”.

Hurley added: “We are delighted to have Tim Thorsteinson join Quantel to continue the company’s transformation.

“Tim has a proven track record of value creation, and his knowledge and experience are a great fit to grow the combined Quantel and Snell business into a major force in the rapidly changing broadcast industry.”

Thorsteinson has twice held the role of chief executive at Grass Valley; he returned to the US manufacturer in 2013 having previously held the same role from 1996 to 2002.

He has also held the position of president of the Broadcast Communications division of Harris Corp.

Thorsteinson said: “[Quantel] is one of the larger independent businesses in our industry, with world class products and a rich history of innovation.

“I want to build on that tradition to create an organization 100% focused on helping our customers prosper in the media technology world.”
