Northern Ireland’s UTV has installed a new archiving system to give the broadcaster faster access to its digital news packages and archive material as it moves towards a tapeless workflow.

Sean Ferrin, head of operations at UTV, said he hoped the Tyrell CCT-supplied Marquis Parking software and MatrixStore cluster from Object Matrix would lead to “significant cost savings”.

“The combination of Object Matrix and Marquis gives UTV a flexible solution that is easily scalable and allows us to accommodate and manage our rapidly growing digital news archive,” he said. “It will greatly reduce the requirement for large quantities of tapes and associated physical storage.”

Ferrin said that UTV content could now be moved with less effort and was “instantly searchable, easily retrievable and totally secure”.

The integrated solution is designed to allow UTV, the Channel 3 licence holder for Northern Ireland, to move entire sequences, including edit decisions, subclips and metadata, from dedicated Avid Isis storage to the MatrixStore environment in a one-click process.

Powered by Marquis Broadcast’s Media Highway Technology, the set-up will use Parking’s edit sequence archive and restore functionality along with MatrixStore’s nearline storage.

Combining technologies from different manufacturers could lead to greater savings for broadcasters, according to Stuart Lawn, technical director at Tyrell CCT. “The joint Marquis and Object Matrix solution presents a greatly simplified and flexible approach to the management of the ever-increasing volume of digital content,” he said.
