Ericsson will use NAB to showcase a virtualised video processing platform designed to help broadcasters and operators deliver Ultra High Definition (UHD) and virtual and augmented reality services.

The MediaFirst Management Controller and MediaFirst Encoding Live 8.1 can run in various ways, including as pure software, on common off the shelf (COTS) server hardware and in the private and public cloud.

The MediaFirst Management Controller provides a central point for encoding live, on-demand, packaging and stream processing and offers failover and licensing management.

MediaFirst Video Processing Encoding Live 8.1 has a unified microservice architecture and includes centralised management, integral failover and dynamic licensing.

The latter is also said to have faster video transcoding and improved density when deployed on a platform that includes Intel’s Quick Sync Video (QSV) video hardware core.

Elisabetta Romano, head of media solutions at Ericsson, said: “We are making it easier to monetise services and drive down processing delivery costs throughout the entire content lifecycle. With these launches, Ericsson simplifies operations for content owners, broadcasters and service providers by enabling the move to complete virtualisation across the media processing delivery chain.”

Ericsson’s Mediafirst Video Processing is based on the technology acquired by the company through its purchase of Envivio in 2015.
