‘It’s been a stellar year for Warp, which has built itself an impressive reputation for breaking the mould’

On 13 March 2024, the four-part drama Adolescence launched on Netflix. The show had been highly anticipated – it was written by Jack Thorne, one of TV’s most acclaimed screenwriters, in partnership with one of its most respected actors, Stephen Graham (who also starred) and directed by Philip Barantini, the director behind the much-lauded Boiling Point.

But whatever the expectations might have been about the series, it managed to exceed them all. Within its first two weeks, the show made history as the first streamer show to top British TV weekly ratings charts.

It has now surpassed 142m views to become Netflix’s second most watched English language show of all time, achieving number one in the viewing charts in 95% of the streamer’s 190 territories. Its exploration of the effects of online misogyny and male teenage violence prompted conversations across the country, including in Parliament.

But Warp wasn’t finished there. In April, Reunion launched on the BBC. This groundbreaking bilingual series featured both spoken English and British Sign Language. Written by William Mager, who is himself deaf, the critically acclaimed show follows a deaf man released from prison and searching for redemption.

“It’s been a stellar year for Warp, which has built itself an impressive reputation for breaking the mould with compelling, agenda-setting and brilliantly made shows – the kind that remind everyone how valuable telly is to the national, and even international, conversation,” said one judge.

With paid commissions with BBC, Netflix, Channel 4 and Disney in the pipeline, it will be exciting to see what’s next from Warp.
