New Pictures for BBC

Described by the judges as a “standout tween drama”, New Pictures’ coming-of-age drama Crongton for BBC deals with the reality of living on a vibrant and chaotic estate.

Crongton uses a mix of live action and animation to help interpret situations characters find themselves exposed to. This allows the show to delve into stronger subject matter – tackling themes of social politics, peer pressure, gang grooming and grief – while keeping its appeal to a younger audience.

These scenes are interpreted creatively as cartoons, 1940s film noir, and dance sequences. One judge described the art direction and cinematography as “striking and carefully considered”, noting that the additional animated elements “enhance the story without overwhelming it”.

To find its cast, Crongton held an open call on social media for underrepresented young actors. This decision nurtured homegrown talent from across the UK and underpinned what judges described as “fresh” performances from talent whose “chemistry and nuance elevate the scenes”.

One judge said: “The series demonstrates remarkable confidence, cultural resonance and emotional depth. Crongton is inspiring, moving, and exceptionally well-crafted, showing how youth drama can engage and challenge its audience with authenticity, care and ambition.”
