‘An extremely powerful, seriously high quality and important programme’
Super Surgeons: A Chance at Life shines a light on the pioneering work of surgical oncologists and the round-the-clock services offered by Macmillan Cancer Support. The documentary series uses raw and confessional audio of calls to Macmillan’s support line in an effort to reshape conversations around cancer, build a nuanced psychological picture of its impact on an individual and highlight the breadth of services that Macmillan offers.
Judges loved the intimate and vulnerable perspective of the surgeons, where the viewer was able to view them as “real people – travelling the way you and I do to work”, the building suspense, the detailed and specific personal stories of patients, and the practical synergy of the brand partnership.
“The sponsorship was subtly built in and the phone call moments showcasing Macmillian’s role supporting patients were moments of brilliance and left the audience with a much wider understanding of Macmillian and their role,” said one judge.
While another praised the beautiful shots, wonderful music, and the “heartbreaking and unexpected ending” that contributed to “an extremely powerful, seriously high quality and important programme”.
In addition, Wonderhood reported that while the series was live, Macmillan was the most talked-about charity online in the UK. Some 74% of viewers reported having a positive reappraisal of Macmillan Cancer Support and there was an unprecedented rise in online donations to the charity.
