Duskwater for Channel 4
Marcel Mettelsiefen’s documentary for Channel 4 set out to portray the next generation of Palestinians and Israelis not through victimhood, but through anger, fear and emotional inheritance.
Set in the West Bank in the wake of 7 October, Mettelsiefen’s film from Duskwater follows two children on either side of the conflict. It focuses not on their differences, but on their shared experiences of growing up in a world defined by violence.
Judges commended the film for its nuanced character development and skilful observation of what one judge called “the most important issue of our age”.
The documentary, which Mettelsiefen described as “the most difficult and daring” of his career, provoked strong emotional responses from the judges. They described it as “haunting and sad” and “beautifully crafted.”
Mettelsiefen’s focus on the children embroiled in violence was highly praised. One judge said: “This is a powerful film with an entirely fresh and new perspective from children and teens in the region.”
They added that Mettelsiefen was clearly attentive to the needs of the young people at the heart of the film. His efforts to treat the children with understanding and humanity stood out to judges and resonated with viewers across Europe.
