Sweet Magnolias axed by Netflix

Netflix has brought the curtain down on drama Sweet Magnolias after five seasons, but the show's showrunner has had another series greenlit by the streamer.

Sweet Magnolias debuted in 2020 and was based on the novels by Sherryl Wood, with Sheryl Anderson showrunning and JoAnna Garcia Swisher starring.

The latter two are also attached Netflix's new drama, Ladies of the House, which is based on Lauren Edmondson's novel of the same name that explores a family's attempts to maintain their vineyard after its charismatic owner dies.

Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon will executive produce via their Rolling Clover label, while Sicario firm Black Label Media is also attached.

 

Italy's MIA unveils 

Organisers at Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo (MIA) have revealed the projects picked from more than 530 submissions from 82 countries ahead of the Rome-based event, which takes place 19-23 October.

The 2026 Official Selection comprises 67 projects: 18 scripted series, 11 feature documentaries, 2 docuseries, 2 TV one-offs, 24 live-action feature films and 10 animated feature films.

The 2026 Drama Co-Production Market's 18 projects hail from 17 countries and include Australian crime drama Criminal Class, Belgian series The Inheritance, and Volcanic, from Iceland and Croatia.

Espionage thrillers Day Traitors (Denmark) and Fortel (Poland) also feature, alongside Restoration (France), Wanda (Italy) while the UK slate features The Many Lives of Miss K, Sirocco, Douglas Mackinnon's Burntime and Monsters' Shrink (UK, Italy).

 

C4's YouTube show to explore Noughties

Channel 4 has ordered a YouTube format fronted by Miquita Oliver that immerses Gen Z participants in the style and culture of the Noughties, Broadcast can reveal.

Interstellar is behind Fresh from the Noughties with Miquita Oliver, which aims to find out if millennials can help Gen Z transform their look and their mindset.

With the support of the former T4 presenter and celebrity stylist Ayishat Akanbi, three Gen Z participants embark on a personalised ‘noughties reset’ to help tackle modern struggles around confidence, friendship, dating and self-expression, and have lessons in building real-world connections and worrying less about perfection.
