This City Is Ours to return for S3

The BBC has extended drama series This City is Ours into a third season before the second has aired.

The third run of the show, created and written by Stephen Butchard, is produced by Left Bank Pictures and will film primarily in Liverpool in 2027.

The second season is set to premiere on BBC One on 25 October and stars James Nelson-Joyce and Hannah Onslow.

This City Is Ours tracks the split of a drug dealing family, with its third run commissioned by Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. Sony Pictures Television distributes globally.

Spanish creator event lands on Netflix

Netflix has taken rights to Spanish sports, music and entertainment event La Velada del Año for the next three years.

The Spanish-language event was created by Ibai Llanos and has run for five seasons, with its 2025 edition reaching more than 9m concurrent viewers, primarily on Twitch. The 2026 edition was also available on YouTube and TikTok.

La Velada del Año debuted in 2021 as a boxing event featuring content creators into a large-scale spectacle bringing together some of the most popular digital personalities from Spain and Latin America.

Netflix has taken the 2027, 2028 and 2029 editions of the show, marking it latest shift to bring social media creators into its service.

Dan Lin exits Netflix as film chief

Netflix's Dan Lin is leaving the streamer nearly three years after he joined as chairman of film.

Lin’s departure follows last week’s shuffle that saw Peter Rice replace Bela Bajaria as chief content officer. Rice, who officially starts on 26 October, will oversee the film team until a new head is announced.

Lin oversaw - but did not commission - KPop Demon Hunters, which is the streamer’s most-watched film of all time, as well as being behind Animals, 14th, and last season’s Oscar nominee Frankenstein.

Key acquisitions include Netflix’s top awards contender for this season, La Bola Negra, as well as last year’s Oscar nominated Train Dreams, and Emilia Pérez.

Jon Stewart extends Daily Show deal

Skydance has extended Jon Stewart's contract to host The Daily Show for another two years.

The deal means the comedian will be in place on the show until at least 2028, a period that will include the US presidential election.

Stewart's most recent deal had been due to run out in November. Some had feared David Ellison-led Skydance could end the Comedy Central talkshow, replicating CBS's decision to end The Late Show With Stephen Colbert prior to Skydance's acquisition of Paramount. That now looks less likely.
