Empathy and compassion drive Eva Carroll’s journalism, coupled with a desire to put herself forward for the big stories. At just 17, she wrote an article on sexual harassment for the Liverpool Echo that earned her a place on the This Morning sofa to discuss its implications.

Her personal touch was also evident in her investigation for the paper into the regional disparity of applications to Oxbridge: as a state school student from a one-parent family who worked throughout her time at university, Carroll’s empathy with the people a ected attracted the attention of multiple publications.

Post-graduation, Carroll wanted to deepen her journalism qualifi cations but the prospect of paying upwards of £5,000 was out of her reach. Since joining ITN, she has been able to study for the NCTJ qualifi cation for free, while doggedly pursuing a string of major stories.

When young girls were stabbed at a dance class in Southport last summer, Carroll volunteered to produce ITV News’ coverage of the incident, which happened just down the road from her home town. Just three months into her job, she nurtured sensitive relationships with members of the victims’ families, spending more than two weeks producing edits from the region.

ITV News managing editor Matt Brindley says her work was “exemplary”, adding: “Eva blends amazing enthusiasm with great empathy and a natural intelligence and curiosity.”

Carroll also impressed her bosses when she stepped up to the plate for the 2024 UK general election. Producing extensive briefi ngs for ITV’s presenters and reporters, she delivered the exit poll to presenter Tom Bradby and put in a 30-hour shift producing the Evening News and News At 10 programmes from Downing Street.

A confi dent producer of ITV’s story packages,Carroll has also worked on the Scunthorpe steel story and produced a piece on the reactions of the trans community to April’s Supreme Court gender ruling. It’s this versatility – human interest stories and political briefi ngs alike are fi rmly in her wheelhouse – that has impressed Brindley.

“Eva is an asset to any news desk, standing out with her perseverance and determination.”
