“The format provides a fun and inspiring way to show the benefits of positive listening between the generations”

Death In Paradise star Don Warrington plays Grandpa in this blend of live action, puppetry and 2D animation that celebrates the bond that kids enjoy with their grandparents.

It couldn’t have come at a better time, with many elderly people physically cut off from their grandkids and learning to navigate new and remote technological ways of communicating.

Each episode centres around a question asked by a real child – from “what happens inside a computer?” to “why do cats go out at night?” and “what are stars?” – and sets out to answer it with humour and memorable facts.

Grandpa’s imaginative storytelling is blended with factual entertainment in creator Chris Heath’s charming series, with a diverse mix of resourceful children taking the lead.

Our judges said the format provides a fun and inspiring way to show the benefits of positive listening between the generations.

They were also impressed by its innovative production model, with the show designed so that its live-action elements can be remade in different languages.

With five heads of department from ethnic minority backgrounds and a mission to promote STEM to young girls through active female role models, every part of the format is designed with diversity in mind, all delivered with a light touch.

Series two is already on its way.
