‘Pete’s genuine love of dogs shone through and gave this show an authenticity and warmth that I wasn’t expecting’
“Pete Wicks and dogs - what a fantastic pairing!” one judge enthuses.
The show sets out to illuminate the stories of some of the 100,000 dogs awaiting new homes in UK rescue centres, based primarily in Basildon but showing tales from around the country. Judges were impressed by how much the team was able to cover given the shows schedule and budget – producers enlisted rescue centre staff to film parts of different dogs’ stories on their phones, creating a sense of authenticity and intimacy with dogs and staff.
The judges were especially impressed by warmth and care this programme showed, with one remarking how it made them shed a tear. The show remained true to life, bringing attention to the increasing pressures on dog rescue centres while still maintaining the hope to save lives and educate viewers.
The opening episode was the channel’s highest unscripted premiere since 2016, with the first series reaching 1.06 million. And it wasn’t just views that were increased – Dogs Trust reported a 30% increase in donations and 10% in applications during the month of transmission, as well as views of Basildon’s rehoming page increasing by 200%.
