Having worked as a photographer as well as in post-production and production, Sebastian Whyte is no TV newbie, but he’s entering an exciting new phase in a career in which he’s focusing on scripted long-form.
In the past three years, Sebastian has been selected for both Directors UK’s Inspire mentorship programme and The TV Collective’s Breakthrough Leaders initiative, while his TV drama pilot script reached the final 5% of more than 1,400 submissions to the Grass Routes competition run by Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters’ Matriarch Productions.
Seb’s work is characterised by a celebration of British Black arts and music and a commitment to championing underrepresented stories and talent.
Through his boutique indie Whispering Rebel, he oversaw every aspect of ITV doc Union Black, a joyful exploration of Black British culture featuring Afua Hirsch, Eddie Kadi and Jazzie B, and also produced True North’s Sky doc Celebrating Black Cinema.
True North creative director Christian Hills says: “Bursting with ideas, passion and creativity, Seb was the perfect choice for the project and delivered above and beyond expectation.”
Another string to his bow was in bridging contemporary dance, TV drama and commercial storytelling when he directed a 2022 campaign for Peaky Blinders’ collaboration with Ballet Rambert.
“Seb’s a rare directing talent, with an eye for detail and an impeccable manner with crew and talent,” says Doc Hearts founder Andy Mundy-Castle, with whom he worked on UKTV projects Black on Screen and Just Jokes. “Seb’s temperament and vision are best in class. He’s always a joy to work with.”
