Early in his career, Matt Cotton amassed production manager credits on a host of high-profile and prestige BBC programming, including four Olympic Games and a string of public events with tight security protocols and live delivery pressures, including Holocaust Memorial Day, New Years’ Eve Fireworks and Trooping the Colour.
He also steered workflows on Bafta-nominated cookery show Nigella: Cook, Eat Repeat and BBC1 staple Antiques Roadshow during and immediately following the Covid pandemic.
Five years ago, Matt made a decisive pivot, moving to Bristol to join the BBC Studios Natural History Unit. It’s paid off in spades: as line producer on Blue Planet III, he’s overseen global locations, underwater filming, specialist safety requirements, international co-production needs, crisis management, and sustainability considerations.
Matt says he has maintained a focus on strategic financial planning to help execs make clear decisions without losing sight of creative ambition.
“That balance, between creativity and realism, is where strong production leadership has real value,” he says. “I try to be strategic and commercially aware, but also friendly, inclusive and good-humoured, because long productions need people who hold the big picture without losing the human one.”
BBCS NHU production executive Dulcie Arnold does not underestimate the scale of Matt’s role on the series.
“Taking on your first natural history production role on one of the most recognised and high-profile global brands is going in at the deep end,” she says.
“Matt has navigated the last four years with skill and confidence while increasing his understanding of natural history filmmaking. His strategic thinking, organisational skills and proactive attitude have been key in guiding the team through the complexities of a landmark production, ensuring momentum and continuity at every stage.”
Matt has also made his mark at the unit in areas such as inclusion, sustainability, and responsible use of AI, and has completed leadership programme Stepping Up and helped organise BBC Studios Bristol Outreach Week.
He credits his neurodivergence for helping to strengthen his leadership ability. “It has pushed me to build clearer systems, make complex information more visual, and create working environments where people do not need to fit one narrow mould to succeed. I have tried to normalise those conversations within my teams, particularly for junior staff who may not yet feel confident asking for what they need.”
Arnold is impressed with the results. “Through his inclusive and solution-focused approach, Matt creates confidence and collaboration, establishing himself as an exceptional leader.”
