Project stars Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe and hails from team behind streamer’s recent drama Disclaimer
Apple TV has picked up a psychological horror inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days that has Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) attached and Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe starring.
Ascension is from Apple Studios and is being executive produced by Cuarón under an overall deal with the streamer through his Esperanto Filmoj banner. Anonymous Content also produce.
The series will be co-showrun by Apartment 7A duo Natalie Erika James and Christian White, who write alongsider Cuarón and his brother, Carlos Cuarón. James will also serve as lead director.
The one-hour drama follows a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who finds unexpected refuge in the teachings of a religious cult she is investigating, until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.
The drama goes on to explore how far people will go and what they will sacrifice to protect loved ones.
Esperanto Filmoj’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz will executive produce alongside Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón.
Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden will executive produce for Anonymous Content. Co-showrunners James and White also serve as executive producers.
Ascension is the latest collaboration between Alfonso Cuarón, Anonymous Content and Apple TV, following Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline-starring series Disclaimer.
It also marks the second project for Apple TV and Balfe, who will next appear in its feature, Tenzing.
Ascension also marks the third thriller greenlit by Apple TV in as many months, following orders for a James Marsden-starring CIA series and a show from ITV Studios-backed Tomorrow Studios.
