Mexican spin-off includes live coverage and comes as part of broader deal between streamer and broadcaster

Mexican broadcast giant TV Azteca has partnered with Disney+ on the first live version of veteran cookery format MasterChef, which will track contestants day-to-day lives during the competition.

MasterChef 24/7 is from EndemolShine Boomdog, owned by format owner Banijay, and will offer a live stream of contestants as they prepare for competition.

The live stream will be available on Disney+ in Mexico and follows cooks as they live, train and compete under one roof in a purpose-built environment.

The new version features continuous live streaming across Disney+ and TV Azteca’s digital platforms, while two-hour long live shows will air in primetime six days a week on the broadcaster’s flagship channel.

Streaming viewers will be able to follow training sessions, technical instruction, team challenges and judges deliberations in real-time, with MasterChef Mexico’s host, Claudia Lizaldi, fronting the rebooted version.

Disney+ and TV Azteca’s Mexican deal

The move is part of a broader arrangement between TV Azteca and Disney+, which has previously carried the Mexican broadcaster’s reality shows such as La Granja VIP.

Disney+ will also now carry a handful of TV Azteca International’s live channels (Azteca Uno 1, Azteca Deportes and Corazon), while some of the broadcaster’s telenovelas such as La Loba will also be available. Further reality shows are also to be added to the streamer, with titles yet to be confirmed.

The move follows a raft of deals between Disney+ and broadcasters across Europe designed to enable the streamer to expand its reach, something recently installed chief exec Josh D’Amaro has highlighted as a key focus for the company.

“As audiences continue to evolve, Disney+ is continuously expanding its content offering,” said Henri Ringel, senior vice president of acquisitions and content sales at Disney LatAm.

“The integration of new formats, such as reality shows from Azteca’s network, reflects this evolution and the need to offer stories that unfold live and are highly engaging, thereby strengthening our value proposition.”

Frank Scheuermann, chief content officer at MasterChef 24/7 producer EndemolShine Boomdog, said the culinary format’s version underlined how the format can “sustain global relevance because it evolves without compromising its core.”

He added: “This model expands access to the process while protecting the integrity of the competition as viewers gain greater visibility into mentorship, technique, and progression.”

Lucas Green, chief content officer of operations at Banijay Entertainment, said: “The strength of the MasterChef brand means we can adapt and scale while still delivering the creativity, warmth and aspirational food storytelling audiences love.

“MasterChef 24/7 will give viewers unprecedented access to the inner workings of the MasterChef journey, forging a greater connection with the show’s community across linear and digital platforms.” The show debuts 17 May on TV Azteca, on which MasterChef México premiered in 2015.
